Religious Education

At St Joseph's, Religious Education is a core subject which enables us to fulfil our mission to spread the Good News about Jesus Christ and to enable our pupils to fully understand that, "With God, all things are possible." RE is not a stand-alone subject among many, but the foundation for all our learning.

From September 2026, RE is taught though 'Discerning Disciples' which is the curriculum strategy for Religious Education in the diocese of Birmingham. Through this curriculum, we nurture children to grow in faith, knowledge and love of God helping them to become compassionate, thoughtful and active disciples of Jesus Christ.

Our curriculum is rooted in the new Religious Education Directory, To Know You More Clearly, and enables children to encounter Scripture, explore the teachings of the Catholic Church, celebrate the liturgical year and reflect on how they are called to live out the Gospel in their everyday lives. Children develop their understanding through engaging lessons, prayer, liturgy, discussion and opportunities to put their faith into action through acts of service and Catholic Social Teaching.

As part of the St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Multi-Academy Trust, we encourage every child to listen carefully to God's call, use their unique gifts and talents, and make a positive difference in the world. Inspired by the example of our patron saint, St. Joseph, our children learn the values of humility, courage, kindness and faithful service, striving each day to live out our school mission: "With God, all things are possible."

Our aim is that every child leaves St. Joseph's as a discerning disciple—confident in their faith, respectful of others, spiritually curious and ready to answer God's call in their lives.

Children are encouraged to learn at home with their families as we value families as our children's first and primary educators. We warmly welcome our families to join with the Catholic Life of our school through our weekly Celebration of our Gifts from God, our Inspire Workshops and our Class Saint Celebrations.

Families are encouraged to support RE learning through RE homework projects which are set once a term. Children will bring these home and the project will be shared on The Communicator.
